Captain Marvel premiered on Monday in style with actual jets flying over the Hollywood Boulevard to mark Marvel’s much-hyped first ever female led movie.

Brie Larson was pictured having taken on an old-school Hollywood glamour complete with a dress in signature Carol Danvers (Miss Marvel) stars.

Larson has received rave reviews already for her performance and the the film has been receiving mixed reviews, with critics praising the 90s nostalgia it’s generated whilst not being too keen on its rather formulaic hero action movie spin.

Larson has spoken a bit about how she trained to play Danvers. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel yesterday she spoke a little bit about her fitness regimen, as well as the fact that she had to learn to do the Danvers ‘cool look’ for the film.

But to get in shape for the franchise’s superhero Larson turned to trainer-to-the-stars Jason Walsh of Rise Nation in West Hollywood, the man responsible for Emma Stone’s physique in Battle of the Sexes and John Krasinski’s transformation from dweed to action here in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

The training focused mainly on weights maybe somewhat surprisingly considering how clearly lean and slender Larson appears in the films. Speaking to PopSugar, Walsh explained: “It’s kind of thought of and accepted that women are just weaker in the upper body.  Brie is cranking out pull-ups for the first time in her life and she’s doing box jumps over her hip height … [She’s doing] things that weren’t necessarily even in her thought process.”

The transformation is fairly astounding because Larson does some fairly insane weight-lifting that nonetheless is not visible in the slender figure she cuts as Carol Danvers.

She was deadlifting 215 pounds she told Variety and her Instagram shows an interesting progression through her 9 months. Walsh makes his female clients (who include Alison Brie of Netflix series Glow)  focus on their upper bodies, often not the approach when it comes to female clients who don’t want to bulk up on top.

Getting stronger is a process I’m committed to showing up for everyday. ???

As well as proving that one can focus on upper body workouts, Larson spoke of the positive effect lifting weights had on her mind. “Just having that, being able to deadlift before I went to work every morning, gave me this mental change that I had never had before.”
