Life imitates art and in some cases that applies to porn apparently. A recent YouGov survey asked people if they tried to bring what they saw in porn into their personal relationships and sexual encounters. The objective in some ways was to see what role porn played in the lives of ordinary Britons. This was to see both what people’s perception of real life sex and porn sex was, as well as figure out their expectations.
The survey threw up a series of interesting findings. Firstly, it turns out 1 in 10 Britons think that sex depicted in porn is similar to real life sex, with 10% of respondents (female and male) who watch porn regularly saying they are “very similar” or “fairly similar”.
In fact, the study showed that people who are the most frequent porn viewers also happen to be the ones who think real life sex and porn sex are most similar.
The survey also asked respondents whether they had ever “done or attempted to do anything with a sexual partner that was inspired by what you had seen in pornography?” Here there was a slightly greater gender gap, but still not by much, with 1 in 3 men saying they’d tried something compared to 1 in 4 women. The study further showed that among millennials (aged 25 to 34) the rate of men attempting something they’d seen in porn was as high as 49%!
Here again there was a correlation between most frequent porn viewers and those most likely to introduce something they saw in porn into the bedroom. Ironically 1 in 3 women suspect that their male partner has attempted with them after seeing it in porn.
The YouGov survey then gets into specifics to figure out what exactly people imitated and came up with top 5 most common ways Britons imitate porn in their intimate moments! Top among these was trying new positions, followed by anal, BDSM, oral sex, and playing with toys!
What the study shows in many ways is just how the lines are blurred between real life sex and performed sex like porn, but also how some forms of porn are can both enhance and fuel our fantasies.
