Social media is a weird and wonderful place where simply strangest and least likely things can catch on in entirely unpredictable ways. Nothing is shocking anymore, but sometimes things do catch your eye and make you wonder just what the heck is going on.
So is the case with this latest story coming from influencer @metaphysicalmeagan who posted a story about combatting Seasonal Affective Disorder otherwise known as SAD for the conditions of fatigue and depression that can sometimes affect us during the winter months and have been associated with a lack of sun. But Meagan’s take on the subject was perhaps a little unorthodox. The photo she posted showed her on her back, legs akimbo, taking in the rays of a beautiful day – tastefully one should add. But to accompany the photo she provided a little explainer to a previous cryptic post she had put on her Instagram, where she’d referred to “sunning her butthole” in order to treat seasonal affective disorder.
“Perineum sunning is an ancient Taoist practice that originated in the Far East,” Meagan’s post reads. “In Taoism, the perenieum or Hui Yin is called the “Gate of Life and Death.” This is a gateway where energy enters & exits the body… The benefits of perineum sunning include…
It brings in prana or solar energy from the sun into the organs within the body which strengthens the organs.”
Soon Meagan’s claims (and photos) went viral, with some referring to her as “that girl who went viral for tanning her butthole!”
But is there any truth in this idea of letting sun into yourself through, ahem, certain orifices? Alas (or thankfully depending on your point of view!) there is absolutely no medical or even much anecdotal evidence that sunning your anus does anything other than make you look like a bit of a mentalist. Also, good luck to you if you’re in the UK trying to catch those fleeting rays!
Whilst there is a Taoist practice of letting sun ‘into your body’ it does not clearly specify or mention anything about doing this through your anus!
Looking for a cure for a bit of seasonal affective disorder? Well a few tried and tested ways approved of by the NHS include: keeping your domestic spaces bright and light, soaking up as much sun during your day as you can, doing actual light therapy, staying outdoors, and sit next to windows during the day. But if you want to sun your butthole go right ahead!
