
A lot of speculation goes on around the effects of drugs on sex and particularly of late with the effect of psychedelics. Increasingly they’ve been tested to see for their effects on depression, LSD and magic mushrooms in particular, with studies showing a very real positive impact among depressed patients. The active ingredient in magic mushrooms, psilocybin, the chemical that causes you to hallucinate, has been shown to have a very positive impact on patients.

As experiments and evidence continue to demonstrate the positive impact of psychedelics, the natural question is, what effect do they have on sex?
The impact of weed on sex has been covered in some detail, as have the effects of MDMA which are known to make you feel closer and more intimate with people. But as we’re only discovering some of the properties of psychedelics on health now, the impact of them on sex are still fairly unknown.
However in a new book called Psychedelic Healing, Dr Neal Goldsmith goes into the revolution in how psychedelics are used for wellness, including in terms of sex. Speaking to Tonic, Goldsmith said that, “Sex, like everything else on psychedelics, is amplified.” Goldsmith also goes into the properties it has in terms of making things more “emotional, visceral, hormonal, and psychological.”

The consensus seems to be that sex on psychedelics has a transcendental and emotionally intense quality that make it more advisable for couples or people in pre-existing relationships.
Part of this is because of the effect of psychedelics is a level of introspection, but at the same time the hallucinatory and other-worldliness that psychedelics have also open you up to fantasy. Mushrooms in particular are supposed to sensitise you to touch.
However, of course advocating sex on weed, which has been shown to have positive effects on pain relief, anxiety, and depression, is different to advocating sex on psychedelics, which are still Class As and are still shrouded in something of a stigma given their potentially harming effects such as pushing people with pre-existing mental health issues into psychosis.

But as researchers and medical experts continue to uncover the beneficial properties of psychedelics, it’s highly likely we’ll be hearing more about their effects on people’s sex lives.
