We talk a lot about dating on this blog, but it\u2019s because it\u2019s basically become a routine in people\u2019s lives much like exercising, going to the barber\u2019s, and remembering to phone your mum! But according to OkCupid, the dating website that still prides itself on being the platform for people actually looking for a relationship and not just hook-ups, 2020 is the year when we – the daters! – can afford to be picky and stand our ground when it comes to our ideologies and preferences!<\/p>\n

A new ad campaign that the site has been running across Youtube and in subways in the US asks questions of the public that are meant to make them consider what they\u2019re really looking for in a date and where they\u2019re willing to compromise, with the encouraging slogan \u201cStart answering. Start dating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Questions such as \u201cCould you date someone who couldn\u2019t be bothered to vote?\u201d is meant to make the public consider more deeply what they could and could not put up with in a potential partner.<\/p>\n

In fact, research carried out by OkCupid in the US showed that there were 4 big issues that were make-or-break when it came to dating. They ranked them according to how often they became a serious bone of contention or issue over which OkCupid users felt they could not compromise. Unsurprisingly in these turbulent times Politics was the number one dealbreaker followed by (slightly more surprising and also abstract) Music, Travel, and Voting.<\/p>\n

By Politics the platform says it describes more a person\u2019s political leanings, beliefs, ideologies, whilst Voting describes who they voted for in recent elections more specifically. When it comes to Music one can but presume that what is meant is musical taste (could you date someone who listens to \u201cShallow\u201d on repeat) and by Travel one assumes it means (as the survey was carried out in the US) that people don\u2019t want someone who doesn\u2019t have a passport and hasn\u2019t been beyond Tunbridge Wells.<\/p>\n
